Mumbai, April 20: The Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC) of the police on Monday arrested a 25-year-old man red-handed while he was allegedly trying to plant a packet of contraband and two country-made revolvers in the car of a Chembur-based businessman. The police said the accused has been identified as Sunil Singh (25), a native of Uttar Pradesh.
The police received the information that someone was going to plant contrabands into the car of Chandrakant Birje (40), near his residence at Nityanand Baugh in Chembur. “We laid a trap and arrested the accused,” said Police Inspector A. Chavan of the ANC. The police said that Birje’s Ford Endeavor car was stationed near his building and the driver had gone to a nearby eatery.
Singh walked around the car atleast four times with a packet in his hands. He soon realised something was amiss when he saw men in plain clothes standing near the car, keeping an eye on him.
“On seeing us, he started running away. We chased him down,” said another officer.
About 500 kilograms of charas and two country-made revolvers were recovered from him. Initial investigations revealed that Birje, who runs a video parlour had a business rival called Neeraj Thakur.
Birje had earlier lodged a complaint with a police station in Chembur alleging that Thakur has been threatening him. “He threatened that he would trap me in a fake case,” said Birje.
