Man tries to kill self before DGP’s office alleging police harassment

Alleging harassment by the police, an alleged eye-witness of a murder case, attempted to commit suicide before the State Police Headquarters at Lakdi-ka-Pul here on Saturday.

The man, who was later identified as Vamsi Krishna, a native of Rajahmundry, came to the DGP office and poured kerosene on his body and tried to set himself ablaze. However, some passersby rushed to his rescue and prevented him from taking the extreme step. While a passerby poured water on his body, the security personnel at the DGP’s office overpowered him.

Vamsi Krishna was first shifted to the Saifabad Police Station and then to Nampally Police Station in an auto-rickshaw. Enquiries revealed that he was an eye-witness in a murder case in the limits of Ramanthapur Police. However, he was reportedly being harassed and tortured by the police in connection with the case.

Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy has reportedly ordered an enquiry into the allegations. The Saifabad Police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Vamsi Krishna.
