Man thrashed, found dead hours later

Hyderabad, December 25: A 30-year-old person, who was thrashed by some others on charges of stealing a watch, was found dead under an abandoned car a few hours after being beaten up at Chaderghat today.

The deceased, Md Aslam alias Chotu, was a native of Mahabubnagar district. He was married and had two children. Unable to bear harassment by Aslam, his wife divorced him six months back and left home with her children. For some days, Aslam stayed with his brother at Mahabubnagar and recently came to the city and was working as a daily wager at Yousuf Bhai banana market at Chaderghat. As he used to come to the market in an inebriated condition and create a scene, other workers there barred him from entering the market.

“Three days back, one of the workers, Zakir, noticed his watch stolen and suspected Aslam. Today morning, around 6 a.m., Aslam went near the market in an inebriated condition when Zakir and some other workers caught him and picked up an argument with him alleging that he had stolen the watch. Zakir and two others thrashed him demanding the watch but later let him off after locals interfered in the matter,’’ Chaderghat SI Mohd Riyazuddin said.

Aslam, who left the place then, was seen only in the afternoon, around 2.30 p.m., underneath an abandoned car outside a garage a few yards away from the market. Locals alerted police who found Aslam dead under the car. The body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for autopsy and a case was registered. “If the post-mortem report confirms that Aslam died of injuries he suffered on being beaten by Zakir and others, we will alter the case and arrest the accused,’’ Riyazuddin said.
