A man, against whom a dowry case was pending, shot dead his wife and injured the mother-in-law at his in-law’s house yesterday. Police said Ratnakar Behera had killed his wife Chuni and injured his mother-in-law Tuni last night who was shifted to SCB Medical College at Cuttack in a critical condition.
According to sub-divisional police officer Ban Behari Sahu, Chuni married to Ratnakar in 2007.
However there was a complaint in Nisha police station last year of dowry torture by the wife againsther husband.
After the incident, Chuni had been staying with her father Anand at Handhidhua here for last two years.
Two days ago Ratnakar came to his father in- law’s house and wanted to take his wife back to home. But his
father in law rejected his offer. Police said this might have infuriated Ratnakar, who last evening fired from his pistol at his wife killing her on the spot He also fired at his mother in law injuring her.
Fortunately the father in -law was spared as he was out of the house. The three year old son of Ratnakar also went
on hiding seeing the firing.The police seized some live cartridges and magazine from the spot. Ratnakar was absconding after the incident.
