Chandigarh, Nov 26: A businessman was shot dead by five unidentified assailants in his office in the busy Sector-20 market on Wednesday evening.
After shooting Harjinder Singh Dhillon in his first floor shop, Dynamic Telecom, the accused fled in their car parked behind the building, the police said.
A female employee of the shop, Simmi, reportedly told the police that five youths came around 7.30 pm and had an argument with Harjinder. Soon, a scuffle ensued in which Harjinder’s turban fell off, she said.
Then one of the assailants took out a .32 bore revolver and shot Harjinder in chest. He fell off the chair, and they fled, the police said.
Hearing the gunshot and Simmi’s cries, shopkeepers rushed to the spot and took the victim to GMSH-16, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Sources said Harjinder had a car finance business in addition to a Tata Indicom franchisee. He reportedly had a dispute with the accused over a car he financed. The police said he was also into transport business.
Simmi reportedly told the police that the youths often came to the shop to meet Harjinder.
Harbhajan, among the firsts to rush to the shop, said he saw the victim lying on the floor, with broken glass pieces scattered all over.
The victim, in his later thirties, was a divorcee and lived with his mother in Phase VII, Mohali.
“We are looking at several aspects; financial dispute is one of them. Teams have been dispatched to trace the accused,” DSP (East) J S Cheema said.
While filing of this report, Simmi was being questioned by the police inside the shop for over three hours. There was no female cop in the police team.
