Man shot dead in Bengal, protesters obstruct rail services

Kolkata: A man was shot dead in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district following which locals obstructed railway tracks on Sunday.

“Nizamuddin Mondol, 30, was shot dead on Saturday evening. The accused person Altaf Baidya is still absconding,” an officer of Baruipur police station said.

He said that the public agitation in Mallikpur railway station is under control and Mondol’s murder is being investigated.

Train services on the south section of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division were partially affected for an hour as a group of locals obstructed railway tracks at Mallikpur station between Sonarpur and Baruipur.

Mondol and Baidya are reportedly Trinamool Congress workers. Police said there is no political link to the murder.
