Mumbai, May 02: A fifty-year-old man, Kartik Parikh, was robbed of Rs15 lakh and assaulted by an unknown person on Saturday afternoon.
The victim was in a rickshaw, on his way to Vile Parle to hand over cash to his employer, and the robber was in another rickshaw.
The Andheri police have registered a robbery case against the unknown person and suspect both the rickshaw drivers to be involved in the crime.
Parikh works with a Vile Parle-based share broker. When Parikh approached the Andheri flyover in a rickshaw, the driver of the vehicle got into a fight with another rickshaw driver. “The two rickshaw drivers were arguing, when Parikh came out of his rickshaw and requested the drivers to not fight as he was getting late,” said senior police inspector Deshmukh.
“Then a person from the other rickshaw came out and tried to snatch Parikh’s bag away from him. But when he put up a fight, he was assaulted with a knife and the assailant fled with the money,” said Deshmukh.
“Parikh then requested his rickshaw driver to take him to a nearby hospital but the driver told him that the assailant had thrown chilli powder into his eyes and so he could not drive,” said another police officer.
“After a few minutes, the driver fled from the spot too, leaving Parikh alone on the road. A journalist, who was passing from the area, noticed Parikh and rushed him to Kamgar Hospital,” he said.
