A 26-year-old man who was to be married to a 23-year-old woman on June 1, 2014, was booked on Wednesday for raping the woman after their engagement on May 7. His parents and relatives were also booked for cheating the woman.
A 23-year-old woman who completed UG in fashion designing from Thanneerpanthal road at Peelamedu in the city got engaged to J Balaji (26) an architect from East Coast road in Vellore. Balaji was residing at Sundakkamuthur in Coimbatore. On May 7, the woman and Balaji had their engagement celebration at Kishan Garden at Sundakkamuthur on the outskirts of the city. Their marriage was fixed for June 1.
After the engagement, Balaji asked the woman to visit him at Sundakkamuthur where he raped her repeatedly. When the bride’s father came to know that his daughter had been raped by Balaji he questioned him. Balaji told him that he would marry his daughter if he agreed to give 50 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs50 lakh as dowry.
On Wednesday, the woman lodged a complaint with Perur all women police inspector Indirani Shobia who registered a case against Balaji under section 376 rape.
