Man quarantined in Belgium for Ebola-like symptoms

A man has been quarantined in Belgium over fears of a suspected case of Ebola, local media reported on Monday.

The Federal Public Health Authority confirmed on Monday that a patient suffering with Ebola-like symptoms was admitted to Saint Pierre University Hospital in Brussels.

The patient has been isolated and is under surveillance.

According to a report in De Standaard, the man admitted to hospital on Monday has recently come back from Guinea, one of the affected countries in Africa.

According to a spokesperson from Saint Pierre’s Hospital, the man was admitted on Monday morning suffering from a high fever. The hospital confirmed he had recently been to Guinea.

“It may take 48 hours before we know the diagnosis. The chances are very small that he is infected with the Ebola virus. The man has perhaps just malaria,” said the spokesperson.

On Sunday, a patient was admitted to a Brussels hospital suffering from what was believed to be the virus, but this turned out to be a false alarm.

On Thursday, the new Minister for Health, Maggie de Block, will meet with her other European ministers to discuss possible ways to curb the spread of the deadly virus within Europe, including the possibility of the introduction of health checks at airports and major train stations.

So far, Britain is the only EU member state that has introduced such measures.
