Hyderabad, May 02: In a chilling incident exposing yet again the plight of the girl child in the country, a man strangled his four-year-old daughter and dumped the body into a culvert in Shamshabad.
The victim, R Ashwini, 4, was the second daughter of Viswanath, a vendor from Shivrampally.
Eight years ago, Viswanath had married Nagamani of Gulbarga and the couple migrated to the city to eke out a living. They have two daughters, Nandini, 6, and Ashwini, 4.
On April 28, Viswanath approached the Shivarampally police saying that Ashwini had gone missing. Police booked a complaint and began investigation. During the investigation, the girl’s mother Nagamani and neighbours expressed doubts on Viswanath as he always hated Ashwini and even tried to kill her when she was a year-old baby by pushing a coin through her throat.
Fearing Viswanath’s murderous attitude towards her children, Nagamani had sent her elder daughter Nandini to her sister’s place some time back.
Police took Viswanath into their custody and during interrogation he confessed to the killing.
According to police, Nagamani, fearing her husband’s actions, used to take Aswini along with her to her workplace. But on April 28, she left her daughter at home and went to work alone as it was too hot outside, Shivarampally SI Ranjit Kumar said.
“Soon after Nagamani left, Viswanath beat up his daughter and strangled her to death,” the SI added. He then placed the body in a gunny bag and took it to Shamshabad. He dumped it into a culvert on the Shamshabad-Mamidipally road.
When Nagamani began questioning him about Ashwini in the night, Vishwanath feigned ignorance and approached police. Based on his confession, the Shamshabad police recovered the body on Saturday night.
He was produced before a magistrate on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody.
