Mumbai, November 02: The Chunabhatti police on Tuesday arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly killing his elderly mother at their Lal Dongar hutment in Chembur. At 9.35pm on Monday, Nana Jagtap beat up his bed-ridden mother Kamal (66) for refusing to eat and dirtying her bed.
Police said the accused initially tried to misguide them by saying that Kamal had fallen unconscious and died after losing her balance and falling on her head. However, his luck ran short when the preliminary post-mortem report showed the cause of death as internal injuries sustained in assault.
Jagtap is unemployed and was taking care of his mother while his younger brother Ramesh Jagtap (30) takes care of the family by earning through the petty jobs like painting work that he do.
On Monday night, the accused got annoyed when his mother did not listen to his request and passed toilet in the room. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) Manoj Lohiya said the accused use to have daily quarrels with his mother. “Jagtap use to take care of his mother. However, he lost his temper. His intention was not to kill. He slapped his ailing mother who could not withstand the blows and died,” Lohiya said.
“A case of murder has been registered against Jagtap after conducting preliminary investigations. Looking at the gravity of the matter, the charges will be changed to culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” he said. Chunabhatti police senior inspector Damodar Chaudhari said the accused got annoyed when the victim refused to eat food.
“The accused stayed back at home after quitting job three months ago to take care of his mother,” Chaudhari said. Accused’s younger brother, in his complaint, said he had gone to work when the incident occurred. He learnt about it when he returned home at night.
Investigators said, “The accused was not in an inebriated conditions and the sole reason for the incident was his impatience to deal with the various needs of his bed ridden mother.”
