Man kidnaps stepfather, arrested by Mumbai Police

Mumbai, July 17: The Malabar Hill area of Mumbai was witness to a 20-minute wild car chase by the police on Tuesday. A 35-year-old man, Mikhail Arora, kidnapped his own stepfather for a ransom of Rs 3 lakhs.

Around 5:30 pm Mikhail picked up an argument with his mother and stepfather at their flat in Goregaon over his demands for Rs 3 lakh. On not getting his way, he manhandled his mother and threatened to set the house on fire by turning the gas stove on at 7:00 pm.

Later around 8:15 pm, armed with two large knives and an air gun Mikhail abducted his stepfather in his black swift car and drove towards El Palazzo building in Malabar Hill, where the stepfather’s sister lives. He then told her to keep the ransom ready. Minutes later the sister alerted the police.

Around 10:15 pm, Mikhail came through a no entry and almost drove into a trap laid by 15-20 police in three jeeps outside the Palazzo building. But, he suspected a trap and suddenly instead of entering through the building gate sped through the no entry towards Kemps Corner.

The Mumbai Police claim Mikhail – the only son of his parents – was leading a lavish lifestyle and hence needed the money to support it.

“He used to approximately get Rs 1 lakh as monthly pocket money,” said, Senior Police Inspector, Malabar Hill Police Station, Iqbal Sheikh.

Mikhail has been booked for attempt to murder and remanded to police custody till Friday.
