Man immolates self after losing job

New Delhi, August 30: A 26-year-old unemployed man allegedly set himself on fire in a park near Humayun’s Tomb in south-east Delhi early this morning, police said.

The victim has been identified as Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Savitri Nagar.

According to police, he took the extreme step as he lost his job a few months back. Kumar had done a computer course and was a clerk with a private company.

Kumar had driven into the MCD Park near Humayun’s Tomb around 2.15 am. He was allegedly carrying two plastic bottles containing kerosene oil.

A security guard, who was posted at the park, saw Kumar entering it and within minutes, heard cries and rushed inside only to see the youth up in flames.

He informed police who rushed him to Safdarjung hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

While being taken to hospital, Kumar told police that he had taken the extreme step as he had lost his job.

He was admitted with 98 per cent burn injuries.

Kumar’s motorcycle was found parked outside the gates of the MCD park. Kumar is survived by his parents and two sisters.
