Man held trying to sell live cartridges

Mumbai,May 29: The crime branch arrested a man who had come to sell 970 imported live cartridges at Null Bazaar in south Mumbai on Thursday.

The police are now trying to ascertain how Maqsood Zahid Khan (31), who trades utensils in exchange of old clothes, had come in possession of the bullets in their original sealed packaging.

Senior inspector of Unit 2 Mangesh Potte said on Wednesday, constables Anwar Memon and Irfan Shaikh received a tip-off that somebody wanted to sell bullets. Khan was arrested and 500 bullets seized from him.

JCP (crime) Rakesh Maria said, “Interrogation led us to the recovery of another 470 cartridges, which he had hid above a public urinal at Null Bazaar. We will produce him in the court on Friday.”

The 970 cartridges recovered include .32, .30, 9mm, 12 bore and .75. The police said these might be worth around Rs 1 lakh or more.
