Man held for stealing diamond jewellery

Chennai, January 01: The suburban police on Thursday arrested a housekeeper at a guest house at St Thomas Mount for allegedly stealing 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery, including a couple of diamond-studded bangles, worth Rs 2 lakh from a room, when the guests were away.

According to the police, Ramaiah (66) and his wife Swarna Ramaiah (62) from Coimbatore had come to Chennai on Monday to make some purchases for their son’s wedding. Since Ramaiah, an engineer, was an alumnus of Annamalai University, he stayed at the university’s guest house named Annamalai Guest House located at the PCM Colony, St Thomas Mount.

On Wednesday, Swarna left two diamond-studded gold bangles of five sovereigns and a six sovereign gold chain in a bag in the room, locked it and went shopping along with her husband.

After a few hours, the couple returned, but left shortly thereafter for a second round of shopping. When they returned at 8 pm, Swarna was shocked to find her jewels missing.

Ramaiah and his wife approached the St Thomas Mount station. The police learnt that one Rajesh (28) of Butt Road, who handled housekeeping, had access to all the rooms.

When the police interrogated Rajesh, he allegedly confessed to have committed the crime. He had taken up the job of housekeeping four months ago. The police recovered the jewellery.
