Man held for shooting sweeper

New Delhi: A 30-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly attempting to kill a sanitation worker here by shooting at him after he suspected the latter of killing his mother using witchcraft, police said today.

Jagdish (45) was at work in outer Delhi’s Mongolpuri when he was shot at around 8 am by his son’s brother-in-law Sagar, they said.

Jagdish was rushed to a hospital with a bullet wound to his back. Sagar fled from the spot leaving behind his motorcycle, they added.

He was arrested by later in the day, police seized a country-made pistol and two live cartridges from him.

Sagar’s mother worked along with Jagdish as a civic sanitation worker. Jagdish allegedly believed in using witchcraft for curing ailments and would carry out various experiments at his residence, a senior police official said.

Around six months ago, Sagar’s mother fell ill and before she breathed her last, she vomited blood, making him believe that Jagdish had used witchcraft to kill his mother, he said.

The accused had been waiting since then to take revenge from Jagdish, police said.
