Sharjah, May 19: The Sharjah Police arrested an Arab man for allegedly trying to smuggle Dh38,000 in counterfeit notes into a neighbouring country.
He was arrested at Sharjah International Airport when he entered the emirate on transit to a neighbouring country.
During interrogation, the suspect initially denied the allegations and told the police that he exchanged the bank notes for American dollars at a money exchange office back in his home country. However, police officers realised that the suspect was lying because dirhams are not exchanged legally in the man’s country of origin.
Interrogation
The police also found out during interrogation that the suspect’s destination was a country that uses its own currency as well as dirhams, which would make it easier to circulate.
The police said the suspect intended to smuggle the fake notes into the neighbouring country and circulate them there.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecution.
