Man carrying pistol detained at Meenakshi temple

Madurai (TN), August 16: A man from Madhya Pradesh today attempted to enter the famous Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple here carrying a pistol, causing a flutter among the devotees.

During frisking at the north tower entrance of the temple, security personnel found a pistol and 11 bullets in possession of Mirsingh Raghuvant Singh, who hails from Vidhisha district, police said.

Singh, who was detained, told police that he has a licence for the fire arm which he carries to protect himself from possible attack by enemies as he owns a large extent of land.

He also said that he was not aware about the ban on carrying arms inside the temple.

Police were inquiring into the genuineness of the licence submitted by Singh.
