Man ‘beaten’ up by police in Aligarh, battling for life

Aligarh: A 30-year-old man is battling for his life after he was allegedly beaten up by police on the Aligarh-Delhi highway.

According to family members, Asif, a fruit vendor, was returning from Khurja late Tuesday night along with his friend Mohsin when they were asked to stop by a police patrol party near Gabhana.

Since Asif was not carrying a driving licence, he panicked and the duo tried to speed away.

The police patrol party chased the duo and managed to grab hold of them. Before they could respond to the police queries, they were allegedly beaten up by the police.

When their family in the Kala Mahal locality near Kotwali came to know of the incident, they rushed to their rescue and had them admitted to a private hospital.

Asif is on ventilator support in a critical condition.

Samajwadi Party MLA from Kol Zamirullah Khan told reporters that he had sought a probe into the matter as he had received a number of similar complaints of police high handedness in the past.

Khan met Senior Superintendent of Police along with family members of the victim.

SSP Luv Kumar told reporters that he had taken a serious note of the incident and a probe has been ordered into the incident.
