A 25-year-old man was arrested Friday for killing his wife after she objected to his extramarital affair, police said.
The arrest occurred at Chhawala in southwest Delhi.
According to police, Latif killed his wife on the night of Sep 19-20. He later concocted a story of robbery-and-murder to mask his guilt.
Police said that they first began investigation after a complaint of theft was made Sep 20. Police found the bedroom of the accused ransacked and the body of the deceased on the bed. Latif also was injured.
The victim’s father, however, was suspicious and lodged a complaint seeking a probe.
Police noted that Latif had strained relations with his wife, and that he had wanted to bring home a second wife.
“The post-mortem report indicated that the death had been caused by smothering. The needle of suspicion pointed to the husband,” a police official said.
Prima facie, it appeared that Latif was dodging the police and was actively involved in the crime.
On interrogation, the accused finally confessed that he had murdered his wife and concocted the robbery story.
