New Delhi:Police today arrested a 42-year- old man for allegedly duping people of about Rs 1 crore by posing as the Chief Security Officer of the Union Home Minister and claiming to be the son of a former Delhi Police Special Commissioner.
The accused, Anchit Chawla, a Delhi University graduate, has been arrested several times in connection with cheating cases registered in Punjab, Jaipur and Delhi-NCR, a senior police official said.
Chawla, who introduced himself to people as Amardeep Singh Brar, son of a retired IPS officer, rented a luxurious apartment in Dwarka Sector 11 for Rs 34,000.
He drove an SUV with a beacon light and a ‘Government of India’ sticker on the number plate. Even his neighbours knew him as the influential man he introduced himself as, police said.
He duped a dealer of mobile phones of Rs 7.50 lakh and cheated several persons of Rs 90 lakh on the pretext of Europe trips, the official said.
Based on a tip off, the police laid a trap and arrested him from Dwarka and impounded his vehicle. During interrogation, it turned up that Chawla was arrested last in 2013 in connection with a case of cheating at south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar police station.
He lives in Dwarka with his wife and six-year-old daughter. From further investigation, it emerged that Chawla and his wife were earlier partners in crime and were involved in several cases of cheating across states.
Chawla has been arrested under charges of impersonation, cheating, forgery and criminal intimidation, the senior official added.
