Mamata orders inquiry into New Delhi station stampede

Kolkata, May 16: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today constituted a three-member high-power committee to probe the stampede at New Delhi railway station which claimed two lives, and announced a compensation of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.

Banerjee ordered the inquiry and instructed officials to ensure that strict action was taken against those responsible for the stampede.

“We are receiving information. We don’t know whether it was a sabotage, negligence or rumour. Whatever it is, a high-power committee will look into what happened and who are responsible,” the minister said here.

The members of committee are Arvind Kumar, B K Shukla and Ratan Chand, all senior Railway officials.

“1.8 crore people travel by Railways in 17,000 trains.

Everywhere there is a summer rush and being a Akshay Tritiya today so many people go to their villages. Sometimes this can happen due to rumour,” she said.
