‘Mamata boycotting functions in WB anti-constitutional’

New Delhi, January 14: CPI(M) today accused Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee of going against the Constitution by deciding to boycott two functions in Kolkata to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

“This is, in fact, anti-constitutional,” CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said.

“The Trinamool Congre ss chief has announced that she will be boycotting two important functions the 150th anniversary of St Xavier’s College and a Union Culture Ministry function at the Science City Auditorium which, the Prime Minister will be attending in Kolkata on January 16 since the state Chief Minister will also be present.

“In a brazen display of their anti-democratic attitude, Central Ministers belonging to the Trinamool Congress (TC) continue to boycott public functions where the Chief Minister and other Ministers of West Bengal are present,” Yechury said in an editorial in the forthcoming issue of party organ ‘People’s Democracy’.

He also accused the Trinamool Congress of “unleashing politics of terror, in its aim to capture power in the state (and) of continuing to provide patronage and cover to Maoists, who, in turn, continue their rampage against CPI(M) activists”.

Yechury said since the Lok Sabha elections, nearly 200 CPI(M) leaders and activists have been “martyred by the TC and Maoist marauders acting in concert”.
