Mamata Banerjee accuses CPM cadre for Barasat gangrape

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that the Barasat gangrape”s murder accused are CPM workers. She said that even those who were protesting were from the CPI(M). ” They are CPI (M) workers. The people who have been apprehended are from CPI (M),” Mamata said. Shouting at a protester in Barasat, Mamata said, “You don”t have to talk so much. Be quiet. Don”t play political games with me.” Mamata made the statement when she paid a visit to the residence of the 20-year-old girl who was raped and brutally murdered earlier this month at Kamduni village. “The chargesheet would be given within 15 days; we will try to get this case done via fast track court. We are also expecting that the court orders death for the culprits”, said Mamata Banerjee. Earlier, Mamata Banerjee travelled for 2.5 kilometres riding on a motorcycle pillion. She briefly met the girl”s family and promised that a chargesheet would be filed in a week”s time and the state would demand death sentence for the culprits. The college student, the daughter of a mason, was on her way home from college after an exam on June 7 when she was apparently dragged into a walled compound by a group of men who raped her and then killed her. Six people have been arrested. The gang-rape and murder triggered angry protests by the residents who attacked police vehicles. Residents in the neighbourhood say they had complained about the deteriorating law and order situation in the area, but the police ignored them. The MP from the area, Haji Nurul Islam who belongs to the Trinamool, was heckled when he tried to visit the family on Saturday. His vehicle was also smashed. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in its recent report, said that Bengal recorded the highest number of crimes against women for the second year in a row in 2012. The state government, however, contested the data, and stated that its disclaimers were not published. (ANI)
