Kuala Lumpur: The newly elected Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said he will run his government with just 10 cabinet ministers. He named three senior ministers in his new Cabinet on Saturday (May 12). He announced that jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim, once the country’s opposition leader and deputy prime minister will be released from prison next Tuesday (May 15).
92-year-old Mahathir Mohammed has once again become the oldest elected leader by defeating Najeeb Razzaq. His Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition ended Barisan Nasional’s six decades in power.
Mahathir Mohammed said the country’s head of state had agreed to pardon jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim, whose case has dominated Malaysian politics for years. It must be recalled that Anwar who once ruled Malaysia for decades, was jailed on sodomy charges in 2015. Believing that it was politically motivated, Mahathir had promised, if elected, he would free Anwar.
