Kuala Lumpur, July 15:A lawyer says Malaysian police have arrested nine Christians accused of trying to convert Muslim university students.
Annou Xavier, who is representing the suspects, says they have denied the allegation.
Proselytizing of Muslims by members of other religions is a serious crime punishable by prison in this Muslim-majority country, though the reverse is allowed. Muslims are not legally able to change religion.
Xavier says police detained the nine in a university hostel room near Kuala Lumpur late Tuesday.
Xavier said Wednesday they were visiting friends, but a Muslim student apparently filed a police complaint accusing them of trying to convert Muslims.
