NEW DELHI, A major reshuffle seems to be imminent in the Congress party as four top ministers have written to party president Sonia Gandhi saying they want to quit their ministerial portfolios and work for the party, television news channel CNN IBN reported.
CNN IBN reported that the ministers in question are Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Overseas Affairs Minister Vyalar Ravi, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, and Law & Justice and Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.
The move comes close on the heels of the party’s poor show in the recently concluded 2012 assembly elections where Congress had fared badly in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab and the initial reports of the AK Antony Committee which will look into the reasons behind the poll debacle, particularly in UP where Rahul Gandhi worked hard to revive the party fortune.
The senior leaders may be replaced by younger MPs in the Union ministry so that the experienced leaders can work for the party.
The Congress has been trying to revive its fortunes as in the next 12 months, several states are scheduled to go for elections.
