Make statements carefully, you are responsible to the nation: Congress to Rajnath

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday slammed Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s ‘irresponsible’ statement alleging that the JNU event had received ‘support’ from terror outfit LeT founder Hafiz Saeed and asked him to make assertions only based on ‘evidence’ as his post makes him responsible to the entire nation.

“The Home Minister should be careful when he makes statements. What he says holds immense value and without any evidence or proof, he must not make such an irresponsible statement that JNU students’ protests are being backed by Hafiz Saeed,” Congress leader PL Punia told ANI.

Adding that Rajnath had made his statement based on ‘fake tweets’, Punia said that he had made a gaffe earlier during the Pathankot attack, when he congratulated the nation on the success of the counter operation when terrorists were still active inside the Air Base.

Punia also slammed the arrests and detentions made in the case saying it was condemnable to do so without any concrete evidence.

“It is wrong to send students in jail without any investigation by the university. JNU has a history of nurturing renowned personalities. Why did they have to arrest them without any evidence?” he said.

Earlier, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja questioned Rajnath’s claim that the JNU event about Afzal Guru had the support of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed.

Rajnath had said a programme that allegedly praised Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University had the support of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed.

“The incident at JNU has received support from Hafiz Saeed. This is a truth that the nation needs to understand. What has happened is very unfortunate,” he said.

His comment came two days after a series of tweets, allegedly by Saeed, appeared under a hashtag asking Pakistanis to support the agitation in JNU.

However, the Delhi Police claim that it was fake twitter account. (ANI)
