Columbo: Security has been escalated with the fears of anti-Muslim violence near mosques in Sri Lanka, that has killed three people. Muslim community comprises 7% of the population in the country, with threats to peace in the country, the government should eradicate Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinism.
If this majoritarian ideology is not crushed in time, the next target to become might be the Tamils. The government had declared the state of emergency in Sri Lanka on Tuesday when a Muslim man was found dead in a destroyed building. It also suspended all the social media as they have been used for carrying hate messages.
Muslims became a target by Sinhala, the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka, after a Sinhalese-Buddhist youth was killed allegedly by some Muslim men in a road rage incident. This gave an opportunity to Sinhala groups to incite violence, targeting Muslim-owned businesses, homes, and mosques.
President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have increased deployment of forces in the city of Kandy in the country’s Central Province for 10 days.
