Major rivers in North India on rise

Lucknow, July 14: Varying degrees of rain occurred at several places across North India today with major rivers in Uttar Pradesh remaining on the rise and flood waters inundating five more villages in Punjab even as the situation in neighbouring Haryana showed signs of improvement.

With several districts in Uttar Pradesh receiving heavy rains including Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Jhansi and Kheri major rivers in the state continued their rising trend.

While the Ganga is on the rise in Kanpur, Dalmau (Raebareli), Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Ballia, the Yamuna is also rising in Agra, Auraiya, Hamirpur, Banda and Naini (Allahabad), a report of the Central Water Commission said.

River Gomti is also in spate in Lucknow while Ghagra is swelling in Elgin Bridge (Barabanki), Ayodhya and Ballia, the CWC report said.
