Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena dissolved his country’s Parliament on Friday, paving way for fresh parliamentary elections in August, around 10 months ahead of schedule.
The BBC quoted Sri Lanka government spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne as saying that Sirisena has signed a gazette notification dissolving parliament, which will come into effect from midnight.
Sirisena had earlier this year defeated the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had served two terms as the President and was seeking a record third consecutive term. Sri Lankans voted in large numbers, with the Election Commission in the island nation saying that on an average, there was an estimated 65-70 percent voting in most regions of the country. (ANI)
