Main roads turn into bathtubs

Hyderabad, September 02: The roads of Hyderabad are known for being ‘water-friendly’. When it rains the water and slush remain on the roads for a couple of days causing traffic snarls and inconvenience for pedestrians.

Pools of water had formed on the busy Rashtrapati Road thoroughfare and motorists merrily splashed water on everyone around while driving through it.

Traffic came to a grinding halt on Tarnaka, Secunderabad, Mettuguda, Ranigunj, Paradise, Lakdi-ka-Pul, Khairatabad, MJ Market, Abids and Nampally.

Koti had its own share of water problems with pools of water and slush clearly visible on Bank Street and opposite Koti Women’s College.

The edges of footpaths were caked in slush making them difficult for pedestrians to use. Esamaiah Bazaar and Chaderghat also bore the brunt of the rains.

One unlikely consequence of the water logging was the hindrance caused to haleem makers. Chaderghat crossroad has a lot of cafes serving haleem and the preparations got off to a late start since the roads around Chaderghat were waterlogged in the morning, although one haleem maker dismissed suggestions that there could be a delay in serving Hyderabad’s favourite dish on Monday evening.

Malakpet, Saidabad, Santoshnagar Colony main road and Dhobighat crossroad were also affected by water logging. Water burst out of the underground drains at some places flooding roads with sewage water and making it difficult to walk on them. This happened at some places near Bank Colony in Gandhinagar.

The roads have taken a beating from the rains. Large potholes dot the black metalled surface of many roads.

Kachiguda station is a prime example.

The road outside the station is pockmarked by potholes and traffic has to slow down to navigate this stretch, causing jams.

According to unconfirmed reports five cars were washed away in Padma Colony near Baghlingampally while the basement of a showroom in Ramnagar near Warasiguda was flooded with rainwater.
