Maharashtra: More than 12 thousand farmers commit suicide from 2015 to 2018

Mumbai: In Maharashtra State, 12021 farmers have committed suicide in 2015-2018 whereas, in 2011-2014, 6268 farmers had taken this extreme step.

According to the report published in NDTV, the data was provided by Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister, Mr. Subhash Deshmukh. Out of these suicide cases, 6888 were eligible for ex-gratia of Re. 1 lakh.

As per the data provided by Mr. Deshmukh, from January to March this year, 610 farmers have committed suicide.

It may be mentioned that farmers committed suicide due to various reasons including crop failures, bank loans, etc.

Despite the announcement of the government’s loan waiver scheme, the suicides have not stopped. Since June 2017, 4500 farmers have committed suicide.

Farmer suicides can impact the upcoming the outcome of Assembly Poll in the State.

Although BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was successful in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, farmer suicides may impact its performance in the upcoming Assembly Polls.
