Mumbai, Nov 26: Since the events of 26/11 when Ajmal Kasab was imprisoned and put on trial for the terror attacks, the Maharashtra government has incurred expenses worth INR 31 crores to be in good health while in judicial custody.
This amount is a significant one given the fact that the Democratic Front government of Maharashtra has been facing a lot of economic problems. At a daily level the expenses have been INR 85 lakhs. The state government is about to complete presenting its evidence against Ajmal Kasab.
The trials would not be finishing any time soon though as is confirmed by Ujwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor who says that a couple of months more would be needed in order for the case to be completed. The state government has already incurred debts to the tune of INR 1.85 lakh crore.
However, the fact that the entire situation is related to national and state security has kept them going on in spite of the financial ramifications. It has been learnt that the figure is not official as the state government has not let out any information regarding the expenses incurred for Ajmal Kasab.
The state government, though, revealed that it has built a special cell inside the Arthur Road jail in order to keep Kasab safe. This exercise has had its fair share of expenses. Maharashtra government though has been following directives issued by the national government. A lot of money has also been spent in other areas like procuring latest arms for using in emergencies as well as related equipments and vehicles.
