Maharashtra Government: Cracked the Pune Facebook case

Those are who responsible for posting morphed photos of Shivaji and Bal Thackeray on social media were identified by the Maharashtra government.

R R Patil, State home minister on Monday said that the case had been cracked but did not reveal the identity of those responsible. The state government had sent teams to arrest them, he said.

“Anti-social elements are posting inflammatory posts to stoke hatred, bitterness and disharmony between groups,” Patil said, warning that action would be taken not only against those who posted photos but also against those who ‘liked’ and shared them.

“Those who ‘like’ and forward objectionable content are siding with the culprits, and in the next few days, you will see stringent action being taken against them,” he said.

The state was exploring the need for legislation to prevent the misuse of social media, such as ‘posting’, ‘sharing’ and ‘liking’ communally provocative issues and photos, to avoid communal tension, said Patil.

The Nanded police last week said those who ‘like’ such objectionable posts would be booked under the IT Act and under the CrPC.
