Rohtak (Haryana): Maharashtra boys came out all guns blazing as they won most of their bouts while in the women’s department Manipuri girls ruled the roster, on the second day of the 2nd Youth National Boxing Championships being held at the National Boxing Academy.
Maharashtra’s winning streak started courtesy of Kailash Yadav (45 kg) when he romped past Shaikh Mohd Fezan of Gujarat with a score of 5-0. Fezan couldn’t adjust to Yadav’s speed as he went down looking for cover.
The run continued with Ajay Pendor’s win over Nagaland’s Krishna Kumar Mote in the flyweight (52 kg) category. Maharashtra’s bantamweight boxer, Rohit Chavan, then extended the run by a unanimous decision after he fought tooth and nail against Kerala’s Jonathan Johny.
However, Chandigarh’s Anshul Punia (46-49 kg) and Services Sports Control Board’s (SSCB) Akash (64 kg) outpunched Maharashtra’s Shivaji Gadem and Tushar Bisane, respectively.
In the women’s section, Manipur’s Heikrujjam Monika Devi (56 kg) had it easy against Telangana’s Mutayla Sasikala as the referee had to intervene in the third round to stop the contest and deemed the lass from Telangana not fit to continue.
Another Manipuri girl Puja Devi displayed her class in the squared ring as she brushed aside the challenge from Preeti Bhanekar with ease. (ANI)
