Maharashtra ATS to seek Jindal’s custody after DP finishes probe

Maharashtra ATS will seek the custody of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks handler Abu Jindal after Delhi Police finish their probe, sources in the ATS today confirmed and added that a designated court of the city has also issued warrant against him as he is an accused in the 2006 Aurangabad arms case. In a related development, state Home Minister RR Patil has also said the same while claiming that prisons in Maharashtra are safe, dismissing reports that Delhi Police objected to the security arrangements for Jindal. ‘I have not come across any reports that they (Delhi Police) have raised an objection, saying prisons are not secure in Maharashtra,’ he said while talking to group of reporters in Mumbai.

If any particular agency arrests a person they first conduct a probe, he said. ‘After they finish the probe, we will file an application to seek his custody,’ Mr Patil said. ‘Just because of the Pune incident, it is wrong to say that prisons in Maharashtra are unsafe,’ Mr Patil said, referring to the killing of suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Mohammad Qateel Siddiqui, in Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail earlier this month. ‘A terrorist like Ajmal Kasab is also safe in our jail,’ he told reporters after a high-level meeting in Mumbai. Commenting on the terror angle emanating from Marathwada region, Mr Patil said the perception that Marathwada is the beehive of terror acts is wrong.
