Maha jails to be connected through video conferencing

Mumbai, January 19: Prisons in Maharashtra would be soon connected through video conferencing facility, ensuring security of jail inmates and speedy trials.

“We are trying to install video conferencing in all jails in the state and have instructed officers concerned to complete the work soon,” Home Minister R R Patil today said.

Patil reviewed the situation of 41 jails during a meeting on the issue and suggested various measures and improvements for inmates, a Home Department official said.

Video conferencing facility is already there at Yerwada, Nashik and Kolhapur jails and hearings of about 7,000 inmates were taken so far, Patil was informed in the meeting.

Patil suggested taking help from private businessmen in order to increase productivity of small scale business and farming undertaken by inmates, the official said.
