Maha for hike in compensation for natural calamities

Mumbai, May 17: Maharashtra government today said the compensation awarded to victims of natural calamities should be increased substantially.

Though the norms for giving compensation are decided by the state government, the funds for the same are sanctioned by the Centre under Calamity Relief Fund.

A meeting, helmed by Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Narayan Rane was held here in Mantralaya today in the backdrop of compensation being given following the cyclone Phyan which hit the coastal Konkan region last year.

“There should be uniformity in the compensation given by the state government and the Centre to the victims of floods, cyclones, earthquakes, lightning, etc,” Rane said.

Also, the compensation needs to be increased substantially, he added.

Accordingly, an official from Relief and Rehabilitation said, recommendations would be sent to the Centre demanding upgradation of compensation.
