Maha govt fears more oil spill

Maharashtra, August 10: The Maharashtra government today expressed fear of more oil spill on the Mumbai coast with over 500 containers lying on the deck of MSC Chitra which collided with MV Khalija-III.

“There were total 1,219 containers on the ship and 512 are on the deck which may fall into the water as the ship has tilted after the collision,” Principal Secretary of Relief and Rehabilitation Department, J S Saharia told reporters here.

A meeting on disaster management was convened today at Mantralaya after the oil-spill caused due to a collision of two cargo ships off the Mumbai coast. Officials from Coast Guard, BPT, JNPT were also present.

Altogether 31 containers are having hazardous material like pesticides and hydroxide which may cause trouble for the marine life, Saharia said.
