Maha govt asks CBI to probe Sonawane killing

Mumbai, March 22: Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil today said the state government has requested the CBI to investigate the killing of Manmad Additional Collector Yeshwant Sonawane, who was burnt alive allegedly by oil mafia on January 25 this year.

“We have written a letter to the CBI to investigate killing of Additional Collector of Manmad Yeshwant Sonawane. The government would do everything to get to the bottom of the case,” Patil informed the Legislative Council replying to a calling-attention motion moved on the issue.

BJP MLC Dhananjay Munde raised the Sonawane killing issue and asked if the Government would check the mobile phone records of the past two years of accused Popat Shinde and slain official Sonawane to get more details and establish bigger links in the case.

Patil agreed to check the mobile phone records and said investigation in the case was progressing steadily.

“The cases have been filed and the process is on,” he added.

However, opposition members alleged that the government had failed to crack down on the mafia network in the state.

BJP MLC Vinod Tawde said the government was not giving categorical answers on the mafia raj.

Not satisfied with the answer, opposition members staged a walkout shouting slogans against the government.
