Mumbai, April 08: Maharashtra ATS today claimed to have busted an international fake currency racket with the arrest of a man hailing from West Bengal and seized counterfeit notes of face value Rs 5 lakh from him.
The accused had been pumping in the counterfeit notes in the market with the help of his associates in Pakistan and Bangladesh for nearly five years, the ATS said.
Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid at suburban Andheri on Monday when the accused Harun Dayamalik Shaikh (51) arrived there and was waiting for someone, said a senior official of Anti Terrorism Squad.
When Shaikh was about to leave as nobody had turned up to meet him, he was caught and 500 denomination fake notes of face value Rs 5,04,500 recovered from his possession, the officer said.
“Shaikh had earlier come to Mumbai twice when he delivered Rs five lakh fake currency to his associates in Mumbai,” he said.
The accused was produced before a local court on Tuesday and was remanded in police custody till April 11.
