Madurai collector says his speech was misinterpreted

Chennai, April 05: A senior election official in Madurai, who has come in the line of fire of Union minister M K Alagiri for his alleged remarks calling for a regime change, today told the Madras High Court that he did not make any such comment.

In his counter-affidavit to a petition seeking his transfer for “influencing” voters by calling for a “change in government”, U Sagayam, the district collector-cum-electoral officer, said, “In no programme of mine I ever said that change of government should come through election.

“During my speeches, I only stressed on the change of mind for avoiding bribe from political parties which tantamount to selling our democratic responsibility and duty.”

Alagiri, the south zone organising secretary of DMK, criticised Sagayam for his alleged remarks advocating change.
