Chennai: The movie ‘Mersal’ caught in controversy for using Centre’s GST and other initiatives were taken as an offence by the BJP, relieving the Producers, the Madras High Court on Friday dismissed the PIL filed by a lawyer seeking revoke of the censor certificate issued to Mersal movie actor Vijay.
The public litigation(PIL) was filed by the lawyer who pleaded the High Court to issue a direction to the Board of Film Certification to revoke the censor certificate for its anti-GST dialogues that offended the Centres Policies.
The bench headed by Justices M.M. Sundresh and Justice M. Sundar, rejected the PIL on the ground that in a mature democracy, the voices of the minority cannot be stifled and its completely up to the viewer whether or not the movie’s content is to be taken into consideration.
The petitioner, A. Ashvathaman of Mylapore in Chennai, expressed how the Board has given a clear go to the movie for public exhibition “even though the film was full of wrong propaganda about the country and contained fake dialogues and scenes which would lead to misconception about our new taxation system.”
He said, “The story of the film does not demand the above said scenes and dialogues which contained fake and fabricated particulars…. The CBFC is duty-bound to see that the young and impressionable minds are guarded against subtle machinations of pseudo artists and producers as the youngsters try to emulate what they have seen in the movies.”
