Machine converts organic waste to reusable content

Dubai, May 19: Nearly 49 per cent of the wastes disposed of in the UAE are organic, a huge chunk of which comes from restaurants, hotels and catering outlets that dump leftover food and rotten edibles on a daily basis.

In a bid to ease the ever-expanding landfills in the country, an Ajman-based company presented the ‘Hands-free Food Waste System’ for the first time in the region at the three-day Middle East Waste Summit (MEWS) 2010 that began at The Palladium in Dubai Media City on Tuesday.

Salah Abdulrehman Amiri, Assistant Director-General of Public Health and Environment Services Sector of Dubai Municipality, and Obaid bin Essa Ahmed, Executive Director of municipalities coordination office and in charge of environment affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Water, inaugurated the summit.
