Ahmedabad,March 13 :India most firbrand BJP leader and gujrat chief minister Modi is keepinf silient on SIT summons .He is responsible for murdering more than 2000 plus muslims in gujrat riots in 2002.Narendra Modi seems to be taking the Special Investigation Team ( SIT) summons in an unusually quiet manner — possibly because no polls are scheduled in the next couple of years.
The Supreme Court- constituted SIT has asked Modi to appear before it for questioning on March 21. The summons follows a petition by Zakia Jafri, the widow of former Congress MP Ehsaan Jafri, who was burnt alive in the Gulbarg.Society massacre in Ahmedabad along with 68 other people during the riots.
Gujarat government spokesperson Jaynarayan Vyas has said the BJP government and chief minister Modi would cooperate with the process of law, a line that has also been taken by the party high command in Delhi.Interestingly, even the Opposition Congress is not baying for Modi’s blood with as much enthusiasm as they usually do, despite the state assembly being in session.
Senior Congress leaders admitted in private that slamming Modi on the issue may help the CM emerge a martyr for the Hindutva cause. The Supreme Court had last April directed the SIT to inquire whether the post- Godhra carnage took place as a result of a larger conspiracy involving the chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and other high- ranking state officials.
State Congress leaders have sniggered at the move in private, because the SIT itself faces allegations of a shoddy probe in the apex court.Last year, when the apex court had asked the SIT to look into Modi’s role in the carnage, the CM had dubbed it a political conspiracy during the last leg of campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls.
On April 28 last year, the final day of campaigning for the third phase of the polls, Modi held four rallies across the state.“ Fifteen days back, Kapil Sibal said Modi should be prepared to go to jail and in fifteen days time, such an order comes from the Supreme Court. What does it mean?” Modi had said in Anand. In Viramgam, he said that he preferred to be hanged than be jailed so that he could be reborn to serve Gujarat.
But this time round, it has been Vyas who has been doing all the talking. All queries are met by: “ The BJP government and the CM would as usual always cooperate with the process of law.” The complaint filed by Jafri and rights activist Teesta Setalvad had listed as many as 12 charges against Modi. It alleged that Modi issued instructions to the state’s chief secretary, director general of police and other senior officials to allow the Hindus to vent their anger on Muslims at a meeting in Gandhinagar on February 27, 2002.
