Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung today felicitated the ‘Gallantry Awardees’ and ‘Distinguished Service Medal Winners’ at a function held at the Raj Niwas here.
Chief Secretary (GNCTD), senior officers of the government of Delhi and officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force were present on the occasion.
A total of 32 awardees were presented Cash Grant Cheques, which included six gallantry awards and 26 distinguished service medals. In addition, ex-gratia amount was given to Murti Devi, mother of Late GDR Anil Kumar (Grenadiers) who was killed on November 20, 2000, in Operation Meghdoot.
The Lt. Governor also released the Flag Day Brochure of the Rajya Sainik Board on this occasion.
“It is a great honour for us to felicitate awardees who have rendered distinguished service to the nation. Their sacrifices are many and so are our debts to them,” the Lt. Governor said while speaking at the event.
“On this occasion, we express our deepest gratitude to the armed forces personnel for their commitment and service to the nation,” he added.
Jung also paid rich tributes to the personnel who laid down their lives while protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
He particularly spoke about the sacrifices made by the family of Armed Forces personnel.
“They sacrifice much more than ordinary people and we must all salute this sentiment of service to the nation,” he said.
The armed forces flag day is observed throughout the country on December 7. It is an occasion to honour the martyrs and men in uniform who valiantly fight at the borders, safeguarding the Nation’s integrity.
It is an occasion to express solidarity with them, while recognizing our obligations to soldiers disabled in operations, their widows and dependents.
It is also a day to enlist citizen’s support for the welfare of serving personnel and resettlement of battle casualties and ex-servicemen and their families.
On this day, ordinary citizens offer donations to the flag day fund and these collections are utilized for the welfare and rehabilitation of personnel and their families. (ANI)
