Lokpal Bill tabled in Rajya Sabha, no consensus yet

The Lokpal bill was taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha Monday evening, two days before the budget session ends. There is no consensus yet on the long-awaited legislation. During the winter session, the Lokpal bill was moved in the Rajya Sabha on the last day of the extended session, but could not be passed as the house was adjourned as midnight struck. The opposition had then accused the government of intentionally delaying and not passing the bill.

The opposition had then accused the government of intentionally delaying and not passing the bill.

On Sunday night, the government had circulated notice of amendment to the Bill especially on the Lokayukta provision leading to speculation that the measure could be brought for consideration and passage.

The absence of consensus on key provisions of the legislation including the one dealing with Lokpal’s superintendence over CBI appeared to be deterring the government from bringing the bill in the Rajya Sabha.
