New Delhi, June 29: Gandhian Anna Hazare is expected to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi here on Thursday to seek her support on the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Reacting to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s comments that he is ready to come under the purview of the Lokpal, Hazare today said Dr. Manmohan Singh should try to convince his Cabinet colleagues on the including the office of the Prime Minister under the Lokpal Bill ambit.
The Prime Minister earlier today during his interaction with senior news editors said that he is ready to come under the Lokpal Bill ambit, but added that his cabinet colleagues feel that it will create instability.
“I have no hesitation in bringing myself under the purview of Lokpal, but many of my cabinet colleagues feel that bringing the institution of Prime Minister under it will create instability,” he said.
Dr. Manmohan Singh today met editors T N Ninan (Chairman, Business Standard), Raj Chengappa (editor-in-chief, Tribune), Kumar Ketkar (Editor, Divya Marathi), Alok Mehta (editor, Nai Dunia) and M K Razdan (editor-in-chief and CEO, Press Trust of India).
The government had earlier this month said prima facie it was opposed to the inclusion of the Prime Minister under the ambit of Lokpal, but was open to the idea of covering him once he demits office.
The government has, however, given hints that it would convene an all-party meeting in July to discuss the inclusion of the post of the Prime Minister under the Lokpal’s purview.
