The Lok Satta has set up four teams after conducting a study of conditions in market yards. The teams visited selected market yards in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States and spoke to farmers, purchasers, brokers, market yards officials and executive committees.
On the occasion, Lok Satta founder-president Jayaprakash Narayan released reports on important issues of market yards — Kurnool, Enumamula, Ramannapet and Kodada..
According to the reports, there was no control of executive committees on market yards. Merchants were not participating in auctions. There was no transparency in purchasing pattern. The farmers have no knowledge of benefits. Businessmen and brokers say onion farmers were not getting good price because they were not bringing quality onion. The farmers won’t get justice if they don’t get Rs 800 per quintal.
The sanitary conditions were not good in yards as the farmers have to stay for two to three days in yards. There was a chance that the farmers would get a good price to their produce in case the selling and purchase activities were conducted in a transparent manner.
Lok Satta leaders Bandaru Rammohan Rao, P Bhasker Rao, Solkar Reddy, Sathuluri Govinda Rao, Bonthu Sambi Reddy and others participated in the program. (NSS)
